Arat Kilo

Arat Kilo is a French collective widely recognised as one of the leading voices of contemporary Ethio-jazz. Since its formation in 2008, the group has built a distinctive musical universe where the rich heritage of Ethiopian music meets jazz, hip-hop, African rhythms and contemporary urban influences.

Inspired by the work of Mulatu Astatke and the legendary Éthiopiques compilations, Arat Kilo creates music that is hypnotic, vibrant and deeply cross-cultural. Brass, driving percussion and improvisation blend seamlessly with modern production, resulting in a sound that is both rooted in tradition and unmistakably contemporary.

Over the years, the collective has collaborated with renowned artists including Mamani Keïta, Mike Ladd, Rokia Traoré and Mulatu Astatke. Their work has taken them to international stages while also inspiring multidisciplinary projects that bring together music, literature and intercultural dialogue.

Through every composition, Arat Kilo celebrates the meeting of cultures and traditions, creating music that transforms heritage into a living, contemporary language of exchange, freedom and creativity.
